Why Ram Trucks are No Longer Called Dodge
Ram trucks are no longer called Dodge due to a strategic decision made by the then CEO, Sergio Marchionne, to differentiate the Dodge brand from Ram. This decision was influenced by several factors, including the desire to separate the Dodge brand, which had been associated with poor quality, from the Ram brand. The split between Dodge and Ram occurred in 2009, with Ram becoming its own division within the company, separate from Dodge.
The separation allowed both brands to focus on their respective traits and identities. While Dodge retained its cars, SUVs, and minivans, the Ram truck lineup became its own brand completely. As a result, Ram trucks produced after 2009 no longer carry the word “Dodge” in their name, and the Dodge Ram no longer exists as Ram is no longer a Dodge product.
This strategic move also allowed the Ram brand to focus on a range of consumer- and work-oriented vehicles, including light- and heavy-duty trucks, SUVs, and cargo vans, while the Dodge brand was refocused to concentrate on performance cars. Despite the split, Ram trucks continue to hold a special place in the hearts of consumers, and while they are no longer affiliated with Dodge, they are still synonymous with dependability, reliability, and capability.
