The Invention of the Rear View Mirror
The rear view mirror was invented by Ray Harroun, an engineer with Marmon, in the early 1900s. Harroun installed a mirror in his car, a Marmon Wasp, in 1911, just before participating in the first Indianapolis 500 race. He got the idea for the rear view mirror after seeing a similar device in a horse-drawn buggy in 1904 .
While Harroun is often credited with inspiring the invention of the rear view mirror, it is worth noting that Dorothy Levitt, an early female motorist, recommended carrying a handheld mirror while driving in her 1906 book, “The Woman and the Car: A Chatty Little Handbook for All Women Who Motor or Want to Motor” . Additionally, Elmer Berger obtained the first patent for the rear view mirror in 1921 and manufactured it through his company, naming the device the “COP-SPOTTER” ).
