Subaru Exhaust Gasket Installation
When installing Subaru exhaust gaskets, it’s important to note the correct orientation for optimal performance. Based on the information gathered from various sources, the general consensus is to install the gasket with the shiny/smooth side facing the head and the bumpy/compression side towards the exhaust manifold.
It’s worth noting that the orientation of the gasket may vary depending on the specific model and type of gasket. However, for the OEM Subaru manifold gaskets, the shiny side should be installed towards the head and the bumpy side towards the exhaust manifold.
In summary, the recommended orientation for Subaru exhaust gaskets is to install them with the shiny/smooth side facing the head and the bumpy/compression side towards the exhaust manifold for optimal sealing and performance.

Which side is up on a valve cover gasket?
Not every cover will have grommets but some will we recommend that you chuck the fastener up into a vise securely. Use a small screwdriver. Work the old grommet. Off take the new grommet.
How do you install exhaust header gaskets?
Side. Now you can stall the rest of the fasteners. Tighten them all securely. Starting in the middle the flange. And working your way out. Now.
Should a head gasket be installed dry?
Clean and Dry
With these modern gaskets, RTV or other sealers can actually hinder the gasket’s ability to form a reliable seal, causing leaks.
Which way does an exhaust gasket go on?
There are no directional markings on the gaskets. When installing Fel-Pro exhaust manifold gaskets, if there is a smooth, metallic side and a composite side, the metallic side should be installed facing out, meaning toward the exhaust manifold.
Do you put anything on exhaust gaskets?
You shouldn’t need to use sealant on the gaskets. Most exhaust manifold gaskets either come with their own sealant (like Fel-Pro’s do with the silver looking stuff), or they are metal and don’t require it either.
How do you know which way a gasket goes?
So it goes at the front of the engine. And we’ve marked it with the word right. So this gasket goes on the right bank of the engine. So next to it I have the left bank gasket.
How are gaskets held in place?
Because gaskets are often held in place with pressure and friction (O-rings, for example) a true “bond” may not be required. In applications such as these, adhesive bonded gaskets are most commonly placed in compression stress.
Does it matter which way head gasket goes?
Some gaskets are asymmetric, and the correct orientation can be visually distinguished. However, others can be installed with either side facing up and the gasket will seal either way. Sometimes gaskets for the same engine might appear very similar, but will not function properly if installed in the wrong direction.
Why is it that the cylinder head gasket Cannot be installed upside down?
It would seal around the cylinders, but it would leak around the oil ports and coolant jackets because the gasket would not match up with each hole.
How are gaskets installed?
Proper Gasket Installation:
- Center the gasket on the flange.
- Be sure surface finish and flatness are satisfactory.
- Tighten the bolts to compress the gasket uniformly.
- Use a torque wrench, well-lubricated fasteners and hardened flat washers to ensure correct initial loading.
