Chevrolet first introduced its Active Fuel Management (AFM) cylinder deactivation system in 2005. This technology was previously equipped on all Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups outfitted with the naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L82 gasoline engine. In January 2018, GM announced an improved version of AFM called Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM) to be initially released in Chevy Silverado trucks. Dynamic Fuel Management is currently available on various General Motors engines, including the 5.3L L84 engine in the 2019 Silverado 1500, which operated with fewer than eight active cylinders more than 60 percent of the time, 9 percent more than a comparably equipped 2018 Silverado with Active Fuel Management.
In addition, General Motors will use cylinder deactivation on its next generation of trucks, part of a menu of tricks to deliver competitive fuel economy without sacrificing V-8 power. GM’s fifth-generation small-block V-8 engine slated for service in GM’s redesigned pickups and SUVs will include cylinder deactivation, which GM calls “active fuel management”.
Therefore, Chevy started using cylinder deactivation technology in 2005 with the introduction of Active Fuel Management, and it has since evolved into the Dynamic Fuel Management system for improved fuel economy and performance .
