In 1961, the full-size Dodge model was the Dodge Polara. The Dodge Polara was introduced in the United States for the 1960 model year as Dodge’s top-of-the-line full-size car. It rode on the 122-inch-wheelbase Chrysler Windsor chassis and was considered the finest of everything Dodge at that time. However, after the introduction of the Dodge Custom 880 in 1962, the Polara nameplate designated a step below the full-sized best-trimmed Dodge model, and it was downsized to what was in effect intermediate, or mid-size status. The Polara name was used by Dodge until 1973, when its position in Dodge’s lineup was replaced by the Dodge Monaco .
The Dodge Dart, while better known today as a compact, was also a full-size car during the 1960-1961 period. It was a huge sales success despite having to deal with competitors Chrysler-DeSoto-Plymouth. However, the full-size Dart vanished after 1961.
In addition, the Dodge 383 cu in (6.3 L) V8 was added in 1961, and the brakes were 11-inch drums. Sales of the new Dart were greater than those of the full-size Dodge Matador and Dodge Polara, which also created an in-house competitor for Plymouth.
The 1961 Dodge Polara D-500 Convertible was a fusion of the Matador and Polara, and it received extensive restyling, like rocket-style tail-lights and a space-age dash. It was billed as the custom-size Dodge and was considered the finest of everything Dodge at that time.
