The Ford F-250 differential requires Motorcraft SAE 75W-90 Premium 4×4 Front Axle Lubricant. If your F-250 has a limited slip rear differential, you will also need to add 8 ounces of “Additive Friction Modifier C8AZ-19B546-A”. However, if you use Royal Purple 75W-140 axle lube, the modifier is not needed. It’s important to note that the front and rear differentials require different specifications, so you should not use the same gear oil in both.

What fluid goes in the front differential?
If you haven’t guessed already, the differential relies on differential fluid (aka gear oil or differential oil) to stay working in peak condition.
What fluid should never be used in a rear differential?
Never, under any circumstances, put engine oil in your differential. This will result in devastating damages to your engine. Engine oil is much different than gear oil, mostly it cannot withstand high pressure. Therefore, engine oil should never be used in place of gear oil.
