Purpose of the Subaru Baja
The Subaru Baja, manufactured from 2002 to 2006, was designed to combine the handling and passenger-carrying characteristics of a traditional passenger car with the open-bed versatility and load capacity of a very small pickup truck. It was marketed as an all-wheel-drive, four-passenger, four-door utility vehicle, offering a unique blend of a sedan and a truck. The Baja was intended to cater to young and active customers, providing a trendy option that could accommodate various lifestyles, from everyday use to outdoor adventures.
The vehicle’s unibody design borrowed heavily from the existing mechanicals and platform, and it was equipped with a 2.5-liter engine, with the option of a turbocharged engine that brought the horsepower up to 210 and torque up to 235 pound-feet, allowing the Baja to manage zero to 60 mph in 7.3 seconds.
Despite its unique design and versatility, the Subaru Baja was ultimately discontinued due to slow sales.
