Honda Clarity Power Source
The Honda Clarity is powered by various alternative fuel technologies, including hydrogen fuel-cell electric, battery-electric, and plug-in hybrid electric systems. The nameplate was initially used only on hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicles, such as the 2008 Honda FCX Clarity. However, in 2017, the nameplate was expanded to include the battery-electric Honda Clarity Electric and the plug-in hybrid electric Honda Clarity Plug-in Hybrid, in addition to the next generation Honda Clarity Fuel Cell.
The Clarity Plug-In Hybrid has an onboard rechargeable battery that stores energy to power the electric motor. The battery can be charged by plugging the vehicle into an outlet at home, work, or any public charging station. There are two ways to charge, and both are accessible through the port located on the front left fender. Level 1 charging can be done by plugging the vehicle into a 120-volt household outlet.
The Clarity plug-in hybrid is motivated by a 181-hp electric motor fed by a 17.0-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The car’s gas engine, a 1.5-liter four-cylinder, serves mainly as a generator for the battery and rarely drives the front wheels directly. The plug-in hybrid produces a combined output of 212 horsepower. As for the hydrogen-powered Clarity, it comes with a 174-hp electric motor that draws electricity from a fuel cell.
In addition, the innovative Honda Clarity becomes the first vehicle family in the automotive industry to offer fuel-cell, electric, and plug-in hybrid technology options.
