What is the first generation Acura CL?

The First Generation Acura CL
The first generation Acura CL is a midsize grand tourer manufactured by Honda’s Acura brand from 1996 until 2003. It is often thought to have been a replacement for the Acura Legend coupe. The CL was not directly related to the first generation TL, which was a Japanese-built model that replaced the Vigor and had a longitudinal engine layout. With the advent of the second generation TL in 1999, the transverse engined CL became more precisely a TL coupe. All Acura CLs were built at Honda’s plant in East Liberty, Ohio, which is also the plant that builds the Honda Civic. The CL was the first Acura to be built in the United States. Following the end of the 1995 model year, the Acura Legend coupe disappeared from Acura’s lineup when the sedan version was renamed the Acura RL. The CL was not a direct replacement for the Legend coupe as it no longer was a 5-speed manual transmission vehicle.
The first generation Acura CL was designed, engineered, and manufactured entirely in the U.S. Unlike other personal coupe vehicles on the market, the CL featured a long list of standard amenities, including leather seats and climate control. For the technical department, Acura installed a 3.2-liter V6 engine mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission. The CL was also the first Acura created exclusively for the North American market and the first Acura to not have a Honda-badged sibling sold overseas. The CL was also the first Acura designed and manufactured in America, respectively at Honda’s design studios in California and East Liberty plant in Ohio.
The first generation Acura CL was sold for less than four full calendar years and was discontinued due to declining sales. Total Acura CL sales from 2000 until 2003, when the last new model was sold, was less than 31,000 units.
