MDS on Dodge Charger
MDS stands for Multi-Displacement System. It is a technology used in certain Dodge Charger models, specifically those with Hemi engines, to improve fuel efficiency by deactivating half of the cylinders under light load conditions. When the engine is not under heavy load, the MDS system shuts off four cylinders, effectively converting the V8 engine into a four-cylinder engine to conserve fuel.
The MDS system is designed to improve fuel economy without sacrificing performance. It is particularly noticeable during highway driving, where it can lead to a slight increase in fuel efficiency. However, some drivers have reported experiencing a delay in acceleration when the MDS system is active, particularly when starting from a stop or during sudden acceleration.
The MDS system is not without its controversies. Some users have expressed concerns about potential wear and tear on the engine due to the frequent activation and deactivation of the MDS system. However, it’s important to note that lifter failures associated with MDS are not common, and the technology has been widely implemented across various Dodge models, including the Charger, Challenger, and Ram.
In summary, the Multi-Displacement System (MDS) in Dodge Charger models with Hemi engines is a fuel-saving technology that deactivates half of the cylinders under light load conditions to improve fuel efficiency without significantly compromising performance.

What Dodge engines have MDS?
These systems are functionally similar with similar components and operation, but since much has already been written on the LS, the Hemi MDS is the focus here. If you’ve got a Hemi-powered 2005-up LX/LC-platform car (Chrysler 300c, Dodge Charger, Magnum, or Challenger), you’ve most likely got the fuel-saving MDS.
Does MDS really save gas?
MDS allows the engine to shut down 4 cylinders to conserve gasoline—at least that is the claim. As you can see, there wasn’t much gas savings running MDS. Just like my Charger 5.7L Hemi, the 8 speed transmission has far more to do with the gas savings than MDS.
How does the HEMI MDS system work?
How does it work? The Gen 3 Hemi firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. When engine load is low and at a steady speed, MDS disables cylinder 1, 4, 6, and 7 sequentially. The computer shuts off fuel to the MDS controlled cylinder.
Does MDS cause lifter failure?
There have also been many MDS lifter-related failures. The actual roller bearing inside the MDS lifter can seize up and fail, chewing its way through the lobe on the camshaft. Instead of spinning as it should, it stays stationary and eats its way through the camshaft, putting metal throughout your engine.
Does Hemi MDS save fuel?
MDS allows the engine to shut down 4 cylinders to conserve gasoline—at least that is the claim. As you can see, there wasn’t much gas savings running MDS. Just like my Charger 5.7L Hemi, the 8 speed transmission has far more to do with the gas savings than MDS.
How do you turn off MDS on a Dodge Charger?
Just leave it in STREET mode…… Still MDS, but nothing like ECO mode. As long as the Transmission is set to Sport or Track mode, MDS will be turned off. I do a Custom mode with Traction Control set to Street (On), Transmission set to Sport, and Steering set to Sport.
What does Dodge MDS do?
MDS is Chrysler’s take on Variable Displacement technology which alters an MDS-equipped engine’s output by deactivating a portion of that vehicle’s cylinders to improve fuel economy while reducing power demands during low impact use.
What does MDS stand for on a charger?
Mds essentially stands for multiple displacement. System so essentially what it’s going to go ahead and do is turn off four of your eight cylinders you have a v8 engine which of course can have a lot
Can you disable MDS on Hemi?
Read. Now that we’ve read the file we’re going to go ahead and go to the settings to turn off the MDS. We’re going to go over to fuel. We’re going to go to lean fuel saving.
Does MDS delete add horsepower?
Why Turn Off MDS? Can I Permanently Disable It? The MDS will be in a truck like a Ram with a Hemi for better fuel economy. Disabling the MDS can give you full engine power (maximum horsepower and torque) if you need it.
