About the Dodge Omni
The Dodge Omni is a subcompact car manufactured and marketed by Chrysler Corporation for model years 1978-1990. It was also sold as the Plymouth Horizon, and both were the first front-wheel drive economy cars assembled in the United States. The Dodge Omni was notable for being the first front-wheel drive economy car to be made in the United States. It was offered as a five-door hatchback, and in 1979, a sleeker three-door hatchback called the Dodge Omni 024 was introduced. The Dodge Omni and Plymouth Horizon were closely related, and many of their parts were interchangeable. The Dodge Omni was based on a European design from Simca and was Chrysler’s first domestic subcompact car. The Dodge Omni was produced for eleven years with very few changes, with around 2,500,000 Omnis and Horizons manufactured, with the Plymouth variants more popular than the Dodge-branded models.
Performance Variants
The Dodge Omni 024, also known as the Dodge Charger, was a hatchback coupe version of the Omni/Horizon introduced in 1979. It was largely designed for appearance over performance and shared the same powertrain as the Omni and Horizon. The Dodge Omni 024 was modified to be a lower, sportier three-door hatchback coupé version of the Chrysler/Simca Horizon, using the five-door hatchback’s floor pan and chassis as a basis. The base engine was a 1.7L Volkswagen inline four, with a 2.2L Chrysler inline four as an option beginning in 1981. The Dodge Omni 024 had unique bodywork and front end styling and was designed in-house at the prompting of Lee Iacocca .
Notable Variants
The Dodge Omni was also notable for the Shelby GLH-S performance variant. Launched in 1985, the GLH option turned the Dodge Omni into a performance car, and this was taken even further in 1986 by Carroll Shelby. The GLH stood for “goes like hell” and was one of the fastest small cars of its time. The Dodge Omni played a significant role in getting Carroll Shelby back in the business of building and modifying cars.
In summary, the Dodge Omni was a significant model in Chrysler’s lineup, being the first front-wheel drive economy car assembled in the United States and offering various performance variants such as the Dodge Omni 024 and the Shelby GLH-S.
