The Acura Legend was Acura’s original flagship sedan introduced in 1986. It was sold until 1995. In 1996, the Legend was replaced by the Acura RL.
The Acura RL, which stood for “Road Luxury”, was essentially an updated version of the Legend. Acura dropped the “Legend” name for their new flagship because market research showed that consumers identified Acura products more by their model names rather than associating the names with Acura as the manufacturer.
So the Acura RL became the successor to the Legend as Acura’s new flagship sedan starting from the 1996 model year onwards. It continued production until 2012 when it was replaced by the Acura RLX.
