Ford Diagnostic System
Ford uses the Ford Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) as its diagnostic system for Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles. IDS is a PC-based scan tool that was introduced with the advent of On-Board Diagnostics II (OBD-II) for all 1996 and newer Ford vehicles. It provides testing, diagnostic, and reprogramming capabilities that are used by factory-trained technicians. IDS is a comprehensive diagnostic tool that covers all Ford vehicles, including cars, trucks, and SUVs.
To use Ford’s diagnostic software, a laptop capable of running IDS is required. Ford recommends the use of either a Panasonic Toughbook CF53 or a Dell Latitude E5440 for their touchscreen interfaces, but any laptop that meets the IDS minimum system requirements will be sufficient.
In addition to IDS, Ford also had the New Generation Star Tester (NGS) as its factory tool before IDS was introduced in 2006. The NGS is still in use today and provides ‘dealer level’ capability when working on Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles.
Ford also offers the Ford Diagnostic & Repair System (FDRS), which is the next generation factory diagnostic software designed for use with VCM II, VCMM, and J2534 compatible interfaces. FDRS provides complete dealership-level vehicle diagnostic coverage for some 2018 and forward vehicles.
It’s important to note that Ford’s diagnostic systems require a certain level of computer system knowledge to operate.

What is the difference between Ford IDS and Fdrs?

What is the difference between Fdrs and Forscan?
They are apples and oranges. Forscan has its uses and is incredibly powerful and important to what those uses are. FDRS is what the dealers use to update and configure new modules for the vehicles. It has no real ability to modify or do custom programming in anyway.
