Lexus ES Drivetrain
The Lexus ES is a front-wheel drive (FWD) vehicle. It has been Lexus’s only front-wheel drive vehicle until 1998, when the related RX was introduced. The sedan occupies the entry-level luxury car segment of the Lexus lineup in North America and other regions. The ES name stands for “Executive Sedan” and has been marketed since 1989 by Lexus, the luxury division of Toyota, across multiple generations, each offering V6 engines and a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout.
The ES shares the same basic chassis as the Toyota Avalon and Camry, and it has been based on the same mechanicals as the Toyota Camry, offering highly attractive pricing against cars like the Audi A6, BMW 5-series, and Mercedes-Benz E-class but lacking their more involving feel. The ES gives buyers a choice of three powertrains, with the ES250 being powered by a 203-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and coming standard with all-wheel drive, while all ES350 trims come with a 3.5-liter V-6.
In 2021, the Lexus ES 250 AWD was introduced, marking the first all-wheel-drive model for the ES series, which has traditionally been front-wheel drive, and not rear-wheel drive like its IS, GS, and LS siblings.
