Production of the Skyline GT-R ended in August 2002. The car was replaced by the GT-R (R35), an all-new vehicle based on an enhanced version of the Skyline V36 platform. Although visibly different, the two vehicles share similar design features and are manufactured in the same factory.

Why did Nissan stop using the Skyline name?
The previous Skyline GT-Rs used the same platform, chassis, etc as the regular Nissan Skyline coupé (the later versions of which are sold in the US as the Infiniti G35/G37). The current GT-R uses a unique platform not related to the Skyline/G35/G37, as well as unique bodywork, hence it’s lost the Skyline name.
