Chevy Bolt EUV Discontinuation
General Motors’ CEO Mary Barra confirmed during an earnings call in late April 2023 that the Chevrolet Bolt and Bolt EUV would be discontinued by the end of 2023 .
The decision to discontinue the Bolt and Bolt EUV comes at a time when the aging pair are suddenly more popular than ever. The Bolt EUV, introduced in 2021, quickly became the better seller, accounting for about two-thirds of Bolt production.
Despite the discontinuation, Chevrolet won’t be out of the game. The Ultium-platform Equinox EV will inherit the Bolt EUV’s place in the lineup, even though it’s a very different vehicle.
The discontinuation of the Bolt and Bolt EUV is surprising considering that sales are better than ever. However, GM is making room for the production of its upcoming electric trucks and SUVs based on a new EV architecture.
The Bolt and Bolt EUV are built at GM’s Orion Assembly plant in Michigan, and GM had already announced plans to retool that plant to ramp up production of the Chevy Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV pickups in 2024. This same consideration led to the discontinuation of the car journalist-beloved Volt hybrid. Chevy does have an entry-level replacement for the Bolt and Bolt EUV coming with the Ultium-based Equinox EV.
In spite of the discontinuation, the Bolts remain among the bestselling electric vehicles and make a strong case for value, earning the top spot among EVs in Cars.com’s Affordability Report.
