Is the Acura NSX electric?
The current second-generation Acura NSX, which was produced from 2016 to 2022, was a hybrid electric vehicle with a twin-turbocharged V6 engine paired with three electric motors. However, Acura has strongly hinted that a third-generation NSX is in development and it will likely be an all-electric battery electric vehicle (BEV).
Acura executives have stated on multiple occasions that a new NSX is planned and it will likely be electric. In 2021, Acura Vice President Jon Ikeda said “I would bet on it [returning as an EV]. It’s going to be electric”. More recently in 2022, Ikeda smiled and declined to comment when directly asked if a new NSX would be electric.
Acura has also teased concept electric vehicles that could preview a future electric NSX. In 2022, Acura unveiled the “Electric Vision Design Study” concept car at Monterey Car Week, fueling speculation it hinted at an electric NSX.
Honda, Acura’s parent company, is developing a new electric vehicle platform called “e:Architecture” that a future electric NSX would likely use. Honda has said this platform will underpin new EVs starting in 2026, which would be around the time a new electric NSX may enter production.
So in summary, while the current NSX is a hybrid, numerous reports and comments from Acura strongly indicate that a third-generation NSX currently in development will likely be an all-electric vehicle when it enters production in the mid-2020s.
