Is a Dodge 318 a good motor?
The 318 was an ok engine but it did burn a fair amount of oil around a quart per 2000 miles. The truck did not tow very good at all very doggy and constant down shifting. If you did not know it your would think it was a v-6. I would say the 318 in a 5 speed manual it would be much better.

That plus a cam, decent intake manifold and headers will get you into the 400 – 450+ hp ballpark without touching the bottom end of the motor (depending on the heads you run and how much cam).

Is it worth building a 318?

How much HP can a 318 block handle?
late 60’s the 318 switched from forged to cast. numerous guys running 550-600 HP w/cast 360 cranks, (think of the number of W2 headed 360’s that have run over the years) the 318 has similar if not more journal overlap, so I’d say it should handle similar power levels. My guess would be 500 to 550, maybe more.
What’s the difference between a 318 and a 360?
The 360 engine, being larger, had higher horsepower and torque ratings, and therefore somewhat better fuel economy. These ratings vary, so I’ll let you look up these figures yourself. One big difference is that the 360 engine is externally balanced, the 318 is internally balanced.
