The Freestar and its twin, the Mercury Monterey, were built in Oakville, Ontario, Canada. The Freestar replaced the Ford Windstar for the 2004 model year. It was marketed as “all-new,” but it was essentially a revamped version of the Windstar, with different headlights and taillights. The Freestar had a fold-flat third-row seat, which was an innovation that had already been adopted by competitors. However, it placed last in many reviews and was no longer competitive compared to the class-defining Chrysler minivans.
The Freestar and Monterey minivan didn’t sell well, which led to their discontinuation. Ford introduced the Ford Flex in 2008 as a replacement for the Freestar and Monterey minivan.
