Filling a Subaru Radiator
To fill a Subaru radiator, follow these steps:
1. Jack up the Front of the Vehicle
– Jack up the front of the vehicle as high as possible to make it easier to access the radiator and to prevent air from getting trapped in the system.
2. Remove the Highest Heater Hose
– Remove the highest heater hose, then fill the system until coolant comes out of the hose. Afterward, re-connect the heater hose.
3. Use a Funnel System
– Fit a funnel system with the correct cap to the radiator or header tank. Open the funnel tap, fill the system, and leave the funnel tap half open. Continually squeeze the top and bottom radiator hoses to force trapped air into the funnel. This process may take around 5 minutes or so.
4. Start the Engine and Turn the Heater Temperature Up
– Start your Subaru engine and turn the heater temperature up to help with the bleeding process.
It’s important to note that the water in the Subaru cooling system can reach boiling point, so extreme caution should be exercised when working on the cooling system. Additionally, always allow the engine to cool down before removing the radiator or coolant reservoir cap.
If you need to replace the coolant, it’s recommended to use Genuine Subaru Super Engine Coolant or a 50/50 premix coolant, and always use distilled water in the coolant system.
Remember to never attempt to remove the radiator cap until the engine has been shut off and has cooled down completely, as the coolant is under pressure and can cause serious burns if mishandled.
