Checking Power Steering Fluid on a Ford Ranger
To check the power steering fluid on a Ford Ranger, follow these steps:
1. Locate the power steering reservoir: The power steering reservoir is usually located on or near the engine and can have a white or yellow reservoir with a black cap.
2. Clean the reservoir: Before checking the fluid level, wipe the reservoir clean with a towel or rag to prevent dirt from getting in while you work on it.
3. Check the fluid level: With the engine running, remove the cap from the power steering reservoir and visually inspect the fluid level. There are usually markings on the outside of the reservoir to indicate the minimum and maximum levels. Ensure that the fluid level is within the recommended range. Do not add fluid if the level is within the FULL HOT range.
If the power steering fluid level is low, you’ll need to add more fluid to help keep your power steering system healthy. Here’s how it’s done:
1. Get the correct power steering fluid: Check your owner’s manual for the recommended type of power steering fluid for your Ford Ranger.
2. Park on a level surface: Park your vehicle on a level surface and set the parking brake.
3. Safety precautions: Roll up or remove loose clothing and keep your arms away from the cooling fan(s) when checking the power steering fluid. Fans can turn on automatically, even when the engine is off.
4. Add the fluid: Slowly add the power steering fluid to the reservoir, being careful not to overfill it. It’s important to use the correct amount of fluid, so refer to your owner’s manual for guidance.
Remember to always consult your owner’s manual for specific instructions and recommendations regarding checking and adding power steering fluid for your Ford Ranger.

Where is my power steering fluid located?
The power-steering fluid can be found in a cylindrical reservoir near the power steering pump or remotely located with hoses from the pump, and should be clearly labeled. The cylinder may be made of either plastic or metal.
Does electric power steering have a reservoir?
Electric power steering systems are simple. Hydraulic power steering systems tend to be heavier than electrical systems. Hydraulic power steering systems require hydraulic fluid, which must be changed from time to time. Electrical systems don’t use any fluid, so you don’t have to do as much maintenance.
Can I just add power steering fluid if its low?
If the dipstick or reservoir level is between “MIN” and “MAX,” you don’t need to add fluid. If the fluid is below the “MIN” line, remove the cap (or leave the dipstick out) and add power steering fluid in small amounts, checking the level after each time. Don’t fill it above the “MAX” line.
Do you add power steering fluid while the car is running?
Start the engine and let it run until the temperature gauge reaches the normal operating range. With the engine idling, turn the steering wheel all the way to full lock, and then turn it the other way to opposite lock. Do this several times. Locate the power steering reservoir.
Do you check power steering fluid with the engine on or off?
Note: This fluid is best checked if the car has been running for a few minutes and has had time to warm up. Check levels with the engine off. Locate the power steering reservoir, confirm it’s the power steering fluid by looking at the label on the cap and remove the top.
Can I just add power steering fluid?
If the dipstick or reservoir level is between “MIN” and “MAX,” you don’t need to add fluid. If the fluid is below the “MIN” line, remove the cap (or leave the dipstick out) and add power steering fluid in small amounts, checking the level after each time. Don’t fill it above the “MAX” line.
Where is the power steering reservoir on a Ford Ranger?
Considering. I haven’t removed the fluid from the reservoir on the pump. More fluid will come out of here. Using a turkey baster or suction pump can be used remove the old fluid from a reservoir.
How do you know if your power steering fluid is low?
Level check back it back out ours is right at the top of the max. We’re in good shape. I like to wipe down the rim don’t let any dirt or contamination go down inside. And reinstall the cap.
What does a car sound like when it needs power steering fluid?
A power steering whine or buzzing noise is caused by cavitation. Cavitation is when air bubbles are mixed with the fluid, so that when they strike the pump impeller, it makes a loud noise.
Does Ford Ranger have electric power steering?
The Ford Ranger introduced the electric steering rack in 2015. The steering rack its self, now part electrical contains an ECU, Torque sensor and motor.
