Ford 1.8 TDCi: Timing Belt or Chain
The Ford 1.8 TDCi Lynx engines can have two high tenacity timing belt systems. The Lynx engine was initially launched with a timing belt for the upper drive system and a timing chain for the lower drive system. However, in 2007, Dayco designed the world’s first belt in oil drive system with a solution to supersede the chain driven high pressure injection pump, as Dayco’s Glen Goldstone explains on GWTV.
The 1.8 TDCi built after 02/10/2007 has a belt in oil (instead of chain) and belt timing.
In summary, the Ford 1.8 TDCi can have both a timing belt and a timing chain system, depending on the specific model and year of manufacture. It’s important to consult with a qualified mechanic or refer to the vehicle’s manual to determine the specific timing system in place for a particular Ford 1.8 TDCi model.

Does 1.8 TDCI have a wet belt?
I recently had the wet belt on my 1.8TDCi fail with sheared teeth and I’m currently in the process of fixing it. The work is made a little more difficult as it’s outside in rainy Wales. Basically, I removed all the engine ancillaries and got the head off. The cam shaft is fine, but the valves are smashed.
Does the Ford Focus Tdci have a timing belt or chain?
Answered by Dan Powell. This engine uses a timing belt.
How often should you change the wet belt on a 1.8 Tdci?
Apparently its 10 years or 150000 miles whichever is soonest.
Are Ford TDCi engines reliable?
The TDCIs have a few issues. EGR valves, injectors, fuel pumps, dual mass flywheels, turbos, any one of which is liable to fail at 100k+. If you buy with this in mind, they’re not bad at all. Personally I got shot of mine at 135k because, like many others, I did not want to wait for an expensive failure.

Which Ford engines have timing chains?
The rest of Ford’s powerplants rely on timing chains to keep the camshaft and valves moving. This includes everything from the older 289/302/351 pushrod V8s to the latest OHC 4.6L and 5.4L V8s.
How long do diesel timing belts last?
between 40,000 and 100,000 miles
Cambelts or timing belts usually need to be replaced, usually between 40,000 and 100,000 miles. Alternatively, for lower mileage cars, the belt is advised to be replaced around four or five years.
What is the most reliable Ford diesel engine?
The Navistar/Ford 7.3L Power Stroke® diesel engine isn’t available on the latest Ford trucks, but its legendary reliability has earned it a high-ranking spot on our list all the same. Look for the 7.3L Power Stroke® in models produced between 1994 and 2003: Power — 275 hp @ 2,800 rpm. Torque — 525 lb-ft @ 1,600 rpm.
What years did Ford have a bad diesel engine?
Issues with the Ford 6.7-liter Power Stroke are most pronounced in the first generation (2011-2014), but some problems have transcended generations. The injection pump could be trouble in pre-2020 engines.
Is the Ford 1.8 TDCI engine reliable?
They’re reasonably bomb proof from the experience friends have had with them. Not the first word in refinement or economy compared to modern engines but still very good. Expect 40’s round town and 50’s mile per gallon on a run and cheap to service and repair.
