Chevy HHR and PCV Valve
The Chevy HHR does have a PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve. The PCV valve is responsible for transferring gases from inside the crankcase to the intake manifold, where they are burned as part of the normal combustion process.
The PCV valve on the Chevy HHR is mounted to the intake manifold, and its replacement might require removal of the intake manifold. It’s important to note that the PCV valve is the same for both the 2.2L and the 2.4L engines in the Chevy HHR.
In general, it is recommended to replace the PCV valve during every major tune-up, and regular maintenance such as changing the engine oil and flushing the engine can prevent sludge build-up inside the oil pan that may cause the PCV valve to fail.
So, if you’re experiencing issues related to excessive gas, poor engine performance, or abnormal conditions, it’s advisable to have the PCV valve checked and replaced if necessary.
If you need to replace the PCV valve in your Chevy HHR, it’s recommended to consult a certified mechanic for the job.

Why does my car not have a PCV valve?
Positive Crankcase Ventilation came around in the early sixties (at least in US cars). So – engines prior to the early 70’s may not have a PCV valve. And ones prior to the early 60’s may not have PCV in any manner.
Do all vehicles have a PCV valve?
Not every vehicle has a PCV valve, but most do. If yours has one, and if your engine has been idling roughly or a malfunction indicator light goes on, check the PCV valve (shown in Figure 8-5) to make sure that it isn’t clogged with sludge from the contaminants in the exhaust fumes or stuck in the wide-open position.
How do I check my PCV valve?
Testing Your PCV Valve
The PCV valve is usually mounted in a grommet on a valve cover, at the end of a hose or tube. One way to check whether a PCV valve is functioning is to remove it from the hose or tube and shake it. If you can hear a metallic rattling noise, it’s likely in good working order.
Will a bad PCV valve throw a code?
Yes a hole in the PCV will cause a vacuum leak and those codes. P0171, P0174, P2195 are all for lean running condition. These may all be from the PCV but I also see issues with the intake gaskets and bolts on that engine.
What are symptoms of a bad PCV valve?
If the engine is difficult to start, idles roughly, misfires and is consuming more oil than usual, the PCV valve is jammed in the open position. When the engine surges and belches out black smoke or there’s an obvious oil leak or build-up of sludge inside the engine, the valve is stuck in the closed position.
